The carnival is a time honoured tradition in Mulhouse, making it the liveliest town in France between 1920 and 1935. The carnival became somewhat lackluster in the wake of world war two until 1953 when a group of leaders of local associations decided to liven it up and update it. The colourful, humorous floats made by over hundred local associations illustrate aspects of local and national life. Every year visitors from all over Europe come to this lively, popular event which features festivals, shows and parades.
