The books “Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver”, “The Little Ghost” and “The Robber Hotzenplotz” are worldwide bestsellers, which are popular with many children. In December 2011 the popular characters will once again transform the Gengenbach Town Hall into a unique Advent calendar. Artist Jan Peter Tripp has been inspired by the original drawings by his father, Franz Josef Tripp, who illustrated the books of Michael Ende and Otfried Preußler.

In the past, the gleaming windows of the “Advent calendar house” have presented the works of Otmar Alt, Quint Buchholz, Marc Chagall and Tomi Ungerer. Over three years (2009 to 2011) the Town Hall will present world famous stars of children’s literature. The books telling the adventures of “The Robber Hotzenplotz” written by Otfried Preußler have been translated into 34 languages, while his book “The Little Ghost” has been published in 32 languages. The stories of “Jim Button” written by Michael Ende have made little readers happy all over the world, from Sweden to Spain and from the United States to Japan.

For 14 years the Town Hall of Gengenbach has been an irresistible attraction during Advent, when it is converted into the world’s biggest “Advent calendar house” with its 24 windows. Come and admire it for yourself: around 120,000 visitors attend the ritual of opening of the calendar windows each year. Music, entertainment and the bright windows transform the Town Hall into a “treasure chest of fantasy”.

The daily opening of the window takes place at 6:00 pm from November 30th to December 23rd. The entertainment on the stage in front of the Town Hall starts on weekdays at 5:00 pm and at the weekend at 3:00 pm. The Advent calendar can be seen until January 6th.
